PRODUCTION: Doc director Ciulei Wraps Shooting on First Feature 2+2

By

BUCHAREST: Romanian documentary filmmaker Thomas Ciulei (The Flower Bridge) is in postproduction with his first feature film 2+2, a dark comedy set during communism in a country named Miranda where a film director and an actor are punished for trying to flee the country.

The punishment consists of making a commercial film about Mirandaworld, a luna park where foreigners can feel the terror of the Secret Police. The money made by frightening the foreigners will save the country from bankruptcy.

“Humour becomes the most powerful weapon of the story, and helps to reveal the traumas of totalitarian society obsessed with control,” the director said in a statement.

2+2 aka The Show Must Go On was written by Thomas Ciulei and Akos Gerstner, with the support of Marius Weber. Ciulei is producing through his Romanian company Europolis Film in coproduction with the German company Ciulei Films.

Representatives of Europolis Film told FNE that the budget is rather small. The project received a production grant of 326,000 EUR (1.2 m RON) from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) in 2008. The film also received support from the German Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

The film was shot during a period of 26 days between 20 August and 15 September 2012. Adrian Silişteanu (Hooked) is the DOP. Gabriel Nechita was the art director. The cast includesCornel Scripcaru, Marius Manole, Mihai Calotă, Gabriel Spahiu, Răzvan Vasilescu, Sabrina Iaşchievici, and Puiu Lăscuş. Postproduction will take place in Germany. Ciulei told FNE that he wants to have the premiere next year after Cannes. Ciulei Films is the sales agent.
